Boromir, Pippin and Merry share a special relation and friendship. All three of them were selected to be part of the Fellowship, whose task it was to destroy the One Ring.

Boromir, being a self-confident and selfish human, has not a lot of respect for the halflings Merry and Pippin. The only thing which unites the three is fear and the task they were given.

Boromir, who was against destroying the ring, but using it for their own good, is distrusted by the other members of the Fellowship. However, when Merry and Pippin get into serious trouble at the end of the first Lord of the Rings episode, it is Boromir who tries to protect the two little hobbits and dies with three deadly arrows in his chest. He has proved everybody wrong.
